Section A- Film Form in US Cinema from the Silent Era to 1990

1- In the film, Singin' in the Rain, diegetic and non-diegetic sound has been used to create meaning. Diegetic sound is when the noise is visible to the viewers so for example, when the actors are speaking, sound that comes from a speaker or orchestra or any sounds that originate from the screen like footsteps or sirens. Whereas, non diegetic sound is when the source is not present. For instance, music or actors commentating in the background or sound effects. The era that this film was created in, sound was very significant and they so they made sure to use it in every second of the scene to exaggerate each movement and any mood that the characters were feeling . In this scene, there is diegetic sound that comes from their own dialogue and from turning on the props.The diegetic sound from Don's voice when he is talking about the props is very casual and Don explains each of the props so easily showing how comfortable he is around them. The Gold Rush Scene 1: (54:58-55:18) Micro elements: Charlie's costume is quite scruffy and dirty. This shows that he isn't the richest man and he wears whatever he can afford/find. This changes at the end of this film but this indicates to the audience that he doesn't have a lot of money so he is quite poor. There isn't any makeup on Charlie and instead, he has quite a scruffy look and doesn't pay much attention to his appearance. However, there is makeup on the girl that comes into the frame at the end of this scene and this could indicate that she is well presented and a little better off than Charlie that she can spend money on her appearance and her warm coat and hat. Charlie uses the props around him to show his excitement and happiness like swinging on the wooden rafter and jumping on the bed. Year 12 Assessment- Narnia

1.a) When shooting the Narnia task, we considered camera shots and angles. We learnt that getting many different angles is the best idea to create good quality content as we found that long frames of the same angle may bore the viewer as they aren't able to get a range of perspectives. When filming, we tried to make sure there were two cameras filming different angles at the same time so we could have double the content that we could use when editing and to make sure that if any shot was out of focus or over-exposed; we don't have to film it again as we have other footage. Some of the shots we used were; Weather Shots - This is where we filmed parts of the weather and scenery to allow it to seem more real to the audience and to set the mood of the scene. This shot does have other purposes but we used this to create an atmosphere for the viewers. Close up shots - This is where a certain feature or face takes up the majority of the frame.
